Exciting news!!! There is some new movement on the plan to provide the Olympic Village in False Creek with a new elementary school!
The site is located on the east side of Hinge Park at the southwest corner of Athletes Way and Columbia Street. This location aligns with the city’s 2007 approved False Creek Official Development Plan, which called for a future elementary school at this specific site.
The new school will be Kindergarten to Grade 7 which will also have a childcare facility. A lack of space for elementary students in Vancouver has been a top concern. Last spring, the VSB said more than 200 students were wait-listed for kindergarten at the school in their catchment in Vancouver. Twelve schools had too many applications then available spaces for kindergarten, leaving 229 students without a school in their catchment.
Now that the site is secured, the VSB will formally apply to the BC Ministry of Education for capital funding for the construction of the school. Funding must be obtained and construction must start no later than the end of January 2024.
